The international air transport association (IATA) recently released data on the global air cargo and passenger markets for February 2019, showing a 4.7% year-on-year decline in cargo demand measured by FTKs, the fourth consecutive month of negative year-on-year growth and the worst performance in the past three years. Freight capacity, measured by available tonnage (AFTKs), rose 2.7 per cent year on year, marking the 12th consecutive month that growth has exceeded demand. In the passenger transport market, total passenger km revenue (RPKs) increased 5.3 per cent year on year, but it was the slowest pace in more than a year, with a 5.4 per cent increase in capacity measured by available seat km, but a 0.1 percentage point decline in capacity to 80.6 per cent, indicating a moderate slowdown in passenger demand.



The data showed that the volume of cargo in the past four months was lower than the same period last year. The air cargo industry is in a downturn and will not improve any time soon. Growth in cargo demand continues to face significant headwinds, including pressure on the industry from trade tensions and the negative impact of a weak global economy, weakening consumer confidence and a decline in global export orders. While the rise of e-commerce and special cargo traffic has created new markets for air freight, weak global trade remains the biggest challenge for air freight. Iata called on governments to recognize the damage caused by protectionism and to move closer to opening borders to movement of people and trade.



In terms of regional situation, in February 2019, freight demand growth in all regions except Latin America shrank year-on-year. Air cargo demand in the asia-pacific region grew by only 11.6 percent year on year and capacity fell by 3.7 percent due to factors such as deteriorating production by exporters, continued trade tensions and China's slowing economic growth. North America was hit by a sharp drop in trade with China, with freight demand down 0.7 per cent year on year, the first time since mid-2016 that the region has seen negative growth. European freight demand shrank 1 percent from a year earlier, mainly due to weaker production conditions at exporters in Germany, the eu's economic powerhouse, and weak demand due to trade tensions and uncertainty caused by brexit.



The data showed that the airline passenger market fell back in February after a strong performance in January due to sluggish global economic growth.
